The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)

ICANN is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation that has a major role in the expansion and evolution the Internet.  Its contract with registries such as dot-com or dot-info and registrars who sell domain names to individuals and organizations allow them to help the domain name system function and expand.
